Over the years, Cliveden has been spelled many different ways, including Cliffden, Clifden, Cliefden, and Clyveden. [3] A portion of the home and the 375 acres (152 ha) of gardens and woodlands are accessible to the public on specific days. On this property, there have been three houses. The first, constructed in 1666, burned down in 1795, and the second, erected in 1824, was also destroyed by fire in 1849. The 2nd Duke of Sutherland commissioned Charles Barry, an architect, to construct the current Grade I listed home in 1851. The current home, which Charles Barry designed in 1851 to replace one that had been burned down, combines elements of the Roman Cinquecento and the English Palladian styles. The mid-17th-century brick terrace or viewing platform, which is 400 feet (120 meters) long and 20 feet (6.1 meters) high and only visible from the south side, supports the three-story Victorian residence. The house's exterior is covered with Roman cement, with terracotta accents like finials, capitals, and balusters. There is a 360° view of Buckinghamshire and Berkshire, including Windsor Castle, above the tree line on the roof of the mansion, which is designed for strolling. The National Trust restored the façade of the mansion and erected a new lead roof in 1984–1986, while Cliveden Hotel repaired the inside. Additional external work, including the repair of 300 sash windows and 20 wooden doors, was done in 2013.
