Royal Military Museum The Imperial War Museum has a location close to Duxford in Cambridgeshire, England. Nearly 200 aircraft, military vehicles, artillery, and small naval vessels are housed at Duxford, the largest aviation museum in the United Kingdom. The museum's huge displays are spread across seven main exhibition buildings. The location also serves as a storage facility for the museum's various collections of documents, books, artifacts, films, and pictures. The location houses a number of British Army regimental museums, including those of the Royal Anglian Regiment and the Parachute Regiment (also known as Airborne Assault).
The location, which was modeled after the historic Duxford Aerodrome, was first used by the Royal Air Force (RAF) during World War One. Duxford was utilized by United States Army Air Forces fighter units to support the daytime bombing of Germany after playing a significant role in the Battle of Britain during World War II. Up until 1961, Duxford was still a functioning RAF airport. The Imperial War Museum was given permission to use a portion of the facility for storage after the Ministry of Defense deemed it surplus to requirements in 1969. In February 1976, the entire land was given to the museum. Many of Duxford's historic structures, including hangars used during the Battle of Britain, are still in operation in keeping with the site's heritage. Over thirty of these structures have listed building status, and several of them have special architectural or historical value. Duxford is "remarkably well-preserved" and "retains the best-preserved technical fabric existing from [a historic airfield] up to
November 1918." The location also has a number of specially constructed museum buildings, including Sir Norman Foster–designed American Air Museum, winner of the Stirling Prize. The location is still in use as an airfield and is frequented by commercial aviation organizations and air exhibitions.
The Duxford Aviation Society, a nonprofit organization established in 1975 to conserve civil aircraft and foster awareness of British civil aviation history, and Cambridgeshire County Council collaborate to operate the website. The National War Museum committee, established by the British government in 1917 during World War One to document the nation's wartime efforts and sacrifices, gave birth to the Imperial War Museum. The Imperial War Museum was the name given to the institution by the time it opened its doors in 1920. When the Second World War started, the museum's scope of reference was expanded to cover it as well. The museum's scope of the study was once more expanded in 1953 to cover all contemporary conflicts in which British or Commonwealth soldiers took part.
As a result of these remit extensions, the museum's collection grew significantly, to the point where many items, particularly those related to airplanes, vehicles, and artillery, could not be efficiently housed or shown.
